What is Concrete Stain?

Concrete stain is an excellent way to enhance the color and appearance of concrete surfaces while protecting them from damage. Unlike paint that sits on top, stains create a semi-translucent finish by reacting with or penetrating the concrete itself, allowing the natural texture to show through. This bonding process creates a durable surface that resists chipping, peeling, and scratching far better than conventional paint.

Here in Georgia, concrete stain handles our humidity and temperature swings better than paint-based options. Professional concrete staining contractors understand the differences between stain types and which works best for your specific project. From our Rockmart facility, our experienced team has completed hundreds of staining projects across Metro Atlanta for both residential and commercial properties.

Key Benefits: Bonds permanently to the concrete surface • Semi-translucent finish enhances natural texture • More durable than paint or epoxy

Our Concrete Staining Process

Step 1: Surface Preparation

First, we thoroughly clean the concrete surface to remove all dirt, grease, oils, and existing coatings. The surface is evaluated for porosity and condition. Any repairs to cracks or damage are completed before staining. For acid-based stains, we may etch the surface to ensure proper reaction. The concrete must be completely dry before stain application begins.

Step 2: Stain Application

The stain type determines the application method. Acid-based stains are applied and left to react with the concrete’s minerals and calcium, creating unique variegated colors. Water-based stains soak into the concrete for a more uniform appearance. Non-reactive acrylic stains deposit pigment directly into the concrete’s pores. Multiple coats may be applied to achieve the desired color depth and intensity.

Step 3: Sealing & Protection

Once the stain has fully penetrated and dried, we neutralize acid stains and clean the surface. A protective sealer is applied to lock in the color and provide resistance to stains, oil, grease, and other contaminants. The sealer enhances the stain’s appearance while making the surface easier to maintain. Most sealed stained concrete allows light foot traffic within 24 hours, with full cure in 72 hours.

Choose Your Stain Type

Acid-Based Stains

Reacts with concrete’s minerals and calcium to create rich, variegated colors, including terra cotta, blue-green, and brown. Known for producing a marbled effect that brings depth and character. Natural, earthy tones with unique patterning—no two surfaces look identical. Best for: Outdoor surfaces like patios and driveways

Water-Based Stains

Soaks into the concrete, offering a more uniform appearance. Available in a wide array of colors that can be mixed to create custom shades. It can also be applied before concrete sealing for added protection. Easier to apply than acid-based stains with more predictable color results. Works well for both interior and exterior applications.  Best for: Interior floors, broader color selection needs

Non-Reactive Stains

Acrylic-based stains deposit pigment directly into the concrete’s pores without a chemical reaction. More opaque than acid or water-based options, producing a uniform, vibrant finish. Offer the most consistent, solid color across the entire surface. Best for: Projects requiring consistent, solid coloring

Perfect For Your Space

  • Interior Floors
  • Patios • Driveways
  • Countertops

Concrete stain transforms residential spaces by adding color without the cost of replacement flooring. Interior floors gain warmth and character while remaining easy to clean. Patios and driveways develop unique outdoor aesthetics with colors that complement landscaping. The semi-translucent nature lets the concrete’s natural texture show through, creating one-of-a-kind surfaces.

  • Restaurants
  • Retail Spaces
  • Breweries
  • Office Lobbies

Commercial spaces benefit from stain’s durability in high-traffic areas. Restaurants and breweries appreciate the stain-resistant surface that handles spills better than bare concrete. Retail environments use custom colors to reinforce branding. The low-maintenance finish reduces long-term upkeep costs compared to other flooring options.
